Behavioural Support

Behavioural Support seeks to understand the underlying causes of a person’s challenging behaviors through consultations with the individual, their carers, families, and other support networks. Following these consultations, a comprehensive plan will be developed. This plan will outline evidence-based strategies designed to address the person’s needs and enhance their overall quality of life.

Challenging behaviors are characterized by their unpredictability and complexity, significantly affecting an individual’s learning, development, safety, and relationships. These behaviors may include property damage, physical or verbal aggression, impulsive or disinhibited actions, and self-injury. Although challenging behaviors are often misunderstood, creating a safe environment with adequate support can help mitigate their impact. The Behavioural Support plan is designed based on evidence-based research to ensure that treatment addresses the areas where the individual needs the most assistance.

These needs can be addressed through the following services:

  • Creating a Positive Behaviour Plan: Developing a tailored plan to address challenging behaviors effectively.
  • Assessment and Intervention: Evaluating the individual to identify triggers and underlying causes of challenging behaviors.
  • Developing a Person-Centered Plan: Crafting a plan that aligns with the individual’s personal goals.
  • Involving Others: Engaging family members, caregivers, professionals, and support providers in the planning process.
  • Skill Building: Enhancing communication and interaction skills to reduce reliance on challenging behaviors.
  • Training for Care Staff: Educating caregivers and providers on techniques to implement necessary support strategies.
  • Environmental Adjustments: Modifying the living environment to improve conditions and reduce potential sources of negative behavior.
  • Minimizing Restrictive Practices: Reducing limitations on the individual’s freedom, with the goal of eliminating such restrictions over time for their safety and well-being.
  • Autism
  • Tourette’s syndrome
